Set within the picturesque National Peak District the Barnsley landscape is dotted with idyllic villages, historic market towns and rich industrial heritage.
Wentworth Castle and its 40 acres of tranquil gardens captured the hearts of the nation when it appeared on the BBC TV series ‘Restoration’. The 18th Century gardens are one the most important historic locations in the North of England providing visitors with atmospheric views and woodland walks all year round.
Cannon Hall Museum Park, Gardens and Farm provide a unique setting of historic parkland and gardens together with a real working farm where visitors can feed the animals - a fun day out for all the family.
Elsecar Heritage Centre located within the former ironworks and colliery workshops of the Earls Fitzwilliam takes visitors back in time where they can explore the attractively restored buildings and monuments.
The RSPB Old Moor reserve in Dearne Valley is a wonderful place for visitors to explore wildlife all year round. The centre offers a programme of events many of them especially for families. If that isn’t enough of the great outdoors, Barnsley is also at the centre of the Trans Pennine Trail - an exciting route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders that links the North and Irish seas.
