Barnsley Community Build (BCB) have recently received £15,000 of funding from Social Enterprise Barnsley (SEB) to purchase a new tipper truck.
The BCB programme is a community business that functions fully as a construction company limited by guarantee with charitable status. The programme was set up to maximise training and employment opportunities in the construction sector in Barnsley. The team runs with funding from SEB’s Barnsley’s Transitional Labour Market Programme who provide BCB with 25 trainees per year, who carry out building works whilst working towards a recognised building qualification.
Since the establishment of BCB in 2001 the programme has helped over 650 trainees to qualify in painting and decorating, bricklaying, gas fitting, plumbing, plastering and joinery. The Worshipful the Mayor and Chairman of BCB Joe Hayward said, “ I would like to thank SEB for the new truck which is essential to us and will allow us to carry out works that provide real work experience to Barnsley people.“
Ian Hately at Social Enterprise Barnsley added, “BCB have a committed staff team and board of Directors, they are putting construction training back on the agenda, quality training of this calibre is essential in the regeneration of the town.”
SEB is part of Barnsley Development Agency and provide help and advice free of charge to community and voluntary groups in Barnsley. SEB also coordinate the Barnsley Transitional Labour Market (TLM) Programme, which addresses worklessness in Barnsley by assisting the long-term unemployed and those with additional barriers, such as incapacity benefit claimants, lone parents, disabled people and ex-offenders, into employment. The TLM programme enables individuals to gain employment alongside valuable experience and qualifications utilising a wage subsidy. The programme is aligned to sector growth areas providing the best opportunity for people to move into permanent employment.
