LITTLE DEARNE CREDIT UNION

Based in Goldthorpe, The Little Dearne Credit Union Ltd offers free advice and information to individuals, particularly those who may not be accepted by high street banks.

Concerned at the number of people falling into the poverty trap and resorting to using the services of dubious loan ‘companies’, in 1989 a group of volunteers started the Thurnscoe Credit Union savings group which later became the Little Dearne Credit Union.

With a combination of paid staff and volunteers, all of whom have undergone training with the local Citizens Advice Bureau and the Welfare Rights team, the Credit Union is able to offer a free advice service covering a range of topics - from money management techniques to where to find help with resolving housing issues and benefits.

In addition, the Credit Union also visits local primary and secondary schools, working closely with Physical, Health and Social Education (PHSE) tutors to promote good money management and basic life skills to pupils as well as providing collection points to encourage children to save for the future.

The premises of the Credit Union are now owned by them after receiving funding and help through Social Enterprise Barnsley.

This enabled the union to generate income by renting out excess office space to other local companies, ensuring that the building overheads are covered and helping to secure their own long term survival.
