Barnsley is undergoing a programme of innovative developments to transform it into a 21st Century Market Town. Ambitious plans and a £380 million budget are behind this urban centre transformation.
How it all started
The process started in November 2000 with the Rethinking Barnsley weekend. This consultation combined ideas from the people of Barnsley - from children to the elderly, professional architects, town planners, consultants, developers and the Council itself.
The vision that came from this was to create the ideal 21st Century Market Town - a modern community that provides employment, culture, the arts, residential, leisure and retail. Barnsley promises a wealth of opportunities for residents and businesses alike.

The Masterplan
After the vision came the the need to put the changes into a clear plan for the future. The Masterplan gives an outline of the projects and changes that will move the town forward over the next thirty years.
