SOUND INVESTMENT FOR BARNSLEY
Sight & Sound Music Workshop have recently received over £15,000 from Barnsleys SRB 5 fund, to purchase equipment and deliver training.
The workshop which was set up in 1985 to alleviate the problems of unemployment within the Dearne area, through music and offers a cheap friendly community recording facility and band rehearsal room. Sight & Sound are a non-profit making organisation, which is run by volunteers. Since moving to a brand new purpose built studio in Bolton on Dearne in 1993, they have gone from strength to strength. Their work includes recording numerous local bands, community organisations, local school choirs and Christmas events, as well as producing compilation tapes of local bands and musicians.
Sight & Sound have used the funding grant to purchase a recording system including supportive peripheral devices and studio furniture to aid working & training with the equipment. The Digidesign system is the latest generation of professional recording equipment and represents the state of the art in creative recording & production industries. There are only half a dozen similar systems in the whole South Yorkshire region, the others residing in the areas major colleges and professional studios.
Wayne Blake, Social Enterprise Business Adviser at Barnsley Development Agency (BDA) played an integral part in the securing of the SRB grant, he added, This new equipment now gives members of the local community who have an interest in Music Technology the opportunity to gain access to learning on equipment that is based on systems in colleges and pro studios. These opportunities will give learners tasters in a subject that in the short term may enrich their lives with knowledge, to aid them with music/technology based leisure activities. In the long term this could lead to studies in Further or Higher Education in the regions major colleges, giving rise to the potential of jobs or careers in the music industries.
Sight & Sound is now better equipped when delivering Community Music based activities and projects to groups in the area such as after schools classes, local heritage projects and other organisations wishing to access music and audio based resources.
