BARNSLEY BUSINESSES TO BENEFIT FROM INWARD INVESTMENT

A substantial investment aimed at raising the profile of business growth sectors and opportunities has just been approved by Cabinet. (Monday 2 February).

Yorkshire Forward have secured funding from the Objective 1 Programme to encourage the restructuring of the economy in South Yorkshire, and the Barnsley Development Agency (BDA) has been offered a subcontract of £156,000 to help promote the Borough to potential investors.

The money will fund additional marketing and research activity by the BDA, which, since its formation in 1998, has been promoting Barnsley as a place for inward investment. Two new positions in marketing and a research will be created, whose jobs will involve investigating and promoting high growth sectors in Barnsley.

Cabinet Spokesperson for Development Cllr Bill Denton said that there are many reasons for investors to come to Barnsley, whether they are already established or just starting up.

“These reasons might not always be apparent to those outside the area, and so it is our aim to inform people of the benefits of locating their business in the area, and to provide them with as much assistance and background as possible,” he said.

“This additional funding will provide posts that will benefit the future of business in the town, which in turn will reap many times the original outlay in investment in the long term.”
