“CHELSEA A CUT ABOVE THE REST”

Chelsea Boddy, aged 7 of Kendray Primary School has been fulfilling her dream of becoming a hairdresser, after winning a poster competition. The competition which was open to pupils of two Kendray Schools; Hunningley Lane and Kendray Primary School.

The pupils were invited to design a poster relating to what they want to do when they leave school, and were asked to talk to family members about their ambitions and aspirations for the future. Over 130 children entered the competition and have all received a certificate for their hard work.


Chelsea spent a day at Leslie Frances hair salon on Eldon Street, Barnsley learning all about the hairdressing business. She had an exciting day being shown around the facilities, talking to staff and watching them hard at work. Leslie Frances are leading providers of modern apprenticeship training to 16 - 18 year olds in Barnsley and deliver Level 1 NVQ's to schoolchildren in their last two years at school.

Mrs Goodhand, Headteacher of Kendray Primary School added, “The poster campaign has fitted in well with the school’s current agenda, which is the development of pupils’ self esteem and aspirations for the future. Through this approach pupils are encouraged to work alongside members of the local community and local businesses wherever possible to gain an insight into what they might like to do in the future.”

The campaign was organised by the Full Employment Area Pilot (FEAP), a scheme organised by Barnsley Development Agency’s Community Enterprise Regeneration Team (CERT), to help people who have been out of work for some time get back into employment.

FEAP Co-ordinator Lynda Chapman said, “We were astounded by the number of entries and the quality of work that the children submitted. The schools were extremely supportive and judging the competition was very difficult. It was wonderful to see the kind of careers that children in Barnsley would like to pursue.”
