BARNSLEY LEADS
An innovative Information Technology programme, developed in Barnsley by the Community Enterprise Regeneration Team (CERT) at Barnsley Development Agency and the University of Sheffield, was part of an international conference on helping people back into work, held in Belfast.
Delegates were told how the Barnsley Fast Track to Information Technology (BFIT) programme had successfully helped people gain high level qualifications and full time jobs in IT. The programme has helped 20 people into well paid jobs and has been used as the basis for a South Yorkshire wide programme the South Yorkshire Fast Track to Information Technology (SYFIT).
CERT Manager Kevin Jebson said, This programme has shown how its possible for local people to gain high level qualifications and well paid jobs in a sector where there is a real shortage of employees. The programme has been very successful and that is why it was chosen to showcase it to an international audience. The development of the programme has seen a further 11 local people start training and they will soon be in a position to get well paid jobs.
The Belfast conference was an opportunity to show the world how Barnsley is at the forefront of skills development, leading to well paid jobs for local people.
