CARLTON GOES GREEN

Following the success of the ‘Green Business Park’ schemes established by the Groundwork Trust in the North West and West Midlands regions, Groundwork is now to promote a similar project on eight sites in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Barnsley Development Agency and North Barnsley Partnership have been working closely with Groundwork and have secured the first Yorkshire scheme that will take place on Carlton Industrial Estate, Barnsley.

The first stage of the scheme involves completion of a baseline study due to commence in June and will be completed by September 2003. Megan Remmer, Green Business Parks Manager for Groundwork Yorkshire and Humber said “I am delighted that the first scheme in Yorkshire will shortly be underway and I look forward to working with BDA and North Barnsley Partnership on completion of the baseline study”.

The study has been made possible by the cost being funded by equal contribution from Groundwork UK and North Barnsley Partnership’s Objective 1 funds. The baseline study will involve consultation with businesses on the estate and the local community to review security, environmental, landscape, and waste and recycling initiatives. The information obtained from this study will be used to plan the improvements that will be made on the estate – improvements that the businesses and communities themselves have prioritised.

BDA’s Andrew Ainsworth welcomed Groundwork interest in Carlton, “BDA would like to thank North Barnsley Partnership for their financial contribution, the Green Business Park initiative will further enhance Carlton as an attractive location for business”.

North Barnsley Partnership Chief Executive Chris Simpson, in recognising the importance of such a scheme, said “We are delighted that the first initiative to take place in Yorkshire will be happening in North Barnsley”.
