The breakfast meeting, which aims to promote investment and development in Barnsley, will also include speeches from David Kennedy, executive director environment and development with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and BDA chief executive John Penney, who will also be introducing the speakers and chairing a question and answer session Explaining why BDA decided to hold the event, John Penney said: In the last 12 months BDA has been successful in levering new investment into the town and borough worth in excess of £23 million, creating over 1000 new jobs. We want this upward trend to continue and the industry professionals attending this meeting will be key to ensuring this. We need their support, foresight and investment. We also know that there have been incorrect perceptions about Barnsley even amongst property professionals, so it is particularly important that the people who can help us re-shape the future of the area are fully aware of the potential here. This event will clearly communicate that potential. A recent survey by consultants Business Strategy identified Barnsley as one of the fastest growing economies in the region. This looks set to continue as, under the South Yorkshire Objective 1 programme, the borough has significant funds to pump prime industrial and commercial property development projects. Details of key new development opportunities will be presented to delegates at the event. John Penny said: The big vision is to engage more fully with public and private partners who are outside the area to transform and regenerate Barnsley into a borough which has a thriving urban centre at its core. BDA is already progressing a number of serious enquiries that could bring up to 2000 further jobs to the town with, for example, a new office development close to the town centre for a national public sector IT division. "We have some really major potential investors waiting in the wings and we hope this event will stimulate further interest, commented Mr Penney.
