VOLUNTARY SECTOR TO BENEFIT FROM NEW BARNSLEY JOBS INITIATIVE

Barnsley Development Agency (BDA) is to launch its new, extended Intermediate Labour Market Programme (ILM), at Priory Campus in Lundwood, Barnsley, on Thursday 27 September at 4.00pm. The ILM programme is designed to create job opportunities for the long-term unemployed, and this newly extended programme from BDA is expected to be particularly attractive to the voluntary and community sectors.

Janet Bibby, team leader for BDA’s Community Economic Regeneration Team (CERT), said: “The ILM programme is a great way of offering re-skilling and re-training opportunities for members of the community that have not worked for some time, for whatever reason. It fills the all important gap between unemployment and the world of work, and we are delighted to be able to offer more ILM places through this new initiative.

“It may be that people have taken a break from work to bring up a family, or that they are long-term unemployed. Regardless of the reason, the ILM initiative enables the individual to get back into the experience and routine of work, and at the same time offers organisations an extra pair of hands which there’s often a desparate shortage of in voluntary and community groups in particular.”

Once an individual is out of the job market for even a short period of time, it becomes increasingly difficult to re-enter the world of work for a variety of reasons. As time goes by, potential job candidates may find they are out of the habit of going to work, or feel that they have lost touch with modern technology and working practices.

Janet Bibby continued: “Other ‘employability’ factors are diminished as people lose touch with current and new methods of working; even out of date references or a simple lack of confidence can prevent people applying for jobs, or being successful at interview.”

Even if employers don’t discriminate against people with an unemployed status, these individuals will often find themselves applying for positions in direct competition with people who are in employment and have the positive factors of up-to-date experience and references etc, in their favour.

Organisations benefit from the ILM programme in many ways; much needed extra personnel can increase an organisation’s capacity, and bringing in an extra member to the team can create development and promotion opportunities for existing full time staff. An ILM employee may themselves have extensive experience from previous employment, and organisations could that the ILM post-holder could fulfil a supervisory position.
