REGENERATION IS A DEAD CERT FOR BARNSLEY
Barnsley Development Agency is celebrating its second anniversary this month, and already the organisation can boast an impressive track record of performance and achievement.
In particular, its Community Economic Regeneration Team (CERT), which is also two years old, has created almost 100 jobs to date and continues to embark on new initiatives to help with the ongoing regeneration of the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough.
CERT has been an important part of the BDA throughout its development, and Team Leader Janet Bibby has been with the organisation since day one.
"There was a fantastic opportunity two years ago for the BDA and CERT to start formulating plans that would have a tangible and positive impact on Barnsley's economic re-generation.
"The area has suffered long-term economic problems and it is absolutely essential that local agencies like ourselves do everything possible to encourage and stimulate re-generation where it counts - at grass roots level working with real people on real projects."
Importantly, the work of the BDA and CERT is not being carried out in isolation. The BDA has ensured that Barnsley's goals are coherent with and have been fully accepted into the Regional Strategy of Wealth Creation, and have become part of the master plan developed by the RDA and Yorkshire Forward to transform the region into a world class player.
In addition to creating close to 100 jobs so far, CERT has also trained another 23 people who have subsequently secured jobs; trained nearly 500 people who have all received relevant qualifications; and supported 44 community organisations, to name but a few achievements.
"There is still much work to do but we've clearly made an extremely positive start and we'll continue to pursue our values and activities relentlessly for the good of the whole of the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough, said Janet."
