Research and business spin-offs are of great importance. For example, The University of Leeds is among the top ten research universities in the UK, and has 35 departments rated internationally or nationally 'excellent' for their research activity.
The European Objective One programme has provided funds for the two Sheffield Universities to help develop hi-tech companies from their research. In addition the White Rose Consortium brings together the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and York to turn intellectual property into businesses. This initiative provides an on-going source of new ideas being created in the region.
Flanked by all of these educational establishments are the Community Education Resource Centres, backed by an excellent careers advisory service throughout Barnsley.
