The Advanced Manufacturing Park
The Advanced Manufacturing Park is the centre of worldclass advanced manufacturing in Yorkshire.
Based on the Rotherham/Sheffield boarder and only a 20 minute drive from Barnsley town centre the AMP is attracting world class companies such as TWI, Cti and the AMRC. The technologies developed on the Advanced Manufacturing Park are being utilised globally contributing to leading edge projects in Formula 1 and the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, a partnership between Boeing and The University of Sheffield, is just one of the world class companies on the AMP making its mark in the industry.
Its vision is to become a world-class global research facility developing innovative and advanced technology solutions for advanced materials forming. Using the latest machines, tools, and software available AMRC are fully committed to applying traditional and experimental scientific principles for solving manufacturing challenges.
The AMRC’s capabilities are dedicated to helping companies improve profitability by optimizing the application of manufacturing technology. Any company or organisation can gain full access to support services offered by the AMRC by becoming a sponsor.
Its research for Messier-Dowty on machining titanium 5553 is just one example of how AMRC’s expertise can benefit companies.
Boeing were looking to reduce the weight of the landing gear components on the new 787 Dreamliner whilst crucially retaining the strength and durability. Titanium was the preferred material and AMRC engineers worked with Messier-Dowty to help reduce the machining of the titanium 5553 components by a factor of 18, and reduce their tooling costs by 30 percent. As a direct result of this, Messier-Dowty became the first British company to win a contract to supply the entire landing gear for a Boeing aircraft.
