The borough is among the first to embark on the government’s “Building Schools for the Future” programme with access to initial capital investment of £150 million. Barnsley’s 14 secondary schools will be merged into nine newly built “Advanced Learning Centres” (ALCs), boasting state-of-the-art facilities, with an emphasis on IT and sport. They will also become a focal point for the wider community, welcoming post-16 and adult learners as well as offering use of their leisure amenities to everyone.
