University Campus Barnsley

The University Campus Barnsley was opened in August 2005 by the University of Huddersfield with additional support and funding from the Higher Education Council for England and Wales (HEFCE), Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional and Development Fund (ERDF).

Over £5million was spent sympathetically renovating the historic and iconic building on Church Street into a University to be proud of. The Campus has new specialist facilities for subjects such as music, art and design, journalism and media production and music technology.

The IT systems include:
A wireless system throughout the building
Laptop lending scheme for students
Videoconferencing
Web casting equipment
Suite of creative and digital industries studios

Students also have access to the Library and Computing Centre. This area brings together everything students need to make studying a pleasure. It has all the facilities you would expect of an advanced computing centre and a modern academic library backed up by first-class support.

The Campus has over 1000 students studying on a range of full-time and part-time, undergraduate, post-graduate and professional courses.

Services to Business

The Centre for Creative Enterprise, based in the University Campus is home to a new undergraduate initiative called ‘Services to Business’ which provides, eligible businesses in Barnsley with up to five days of free, basic work and support. It employs four placement students who have completed two years of study in their chosen field these include Marketing, Accountancy, Multimedia and Web Design.

The Centre works closely with the Barnsley Development Agency as well as their partners, Enterprising Barnsley and the Barnsley Business Innovation Centre. One of their biggest aims is to forge strong relationships with businesses in Barnsley in the hope that work can then be referred on to them.  This will enable clients to continue to receive the support they need and in turn businesses in Barnsley can develop their own portfolio of clients.
